In the world of Muay Thai, there’s an art to counter-fighting that combines patience, precision, and timing. Counter-fighters have a unique ability to take their opponents’ aggression and turn it into their advantage, often dictating the pace of a fight with subtle, calculated movements. As a coach, I have a deep appreciation for these techniques, and I want to share my five favorite Muay Thai counter-fighters—each a master of their craft.
1. Samart Payakaroon: The Jade Face Killer
It’s no secret that Samart is my favorite Muay Thai fighter of all time. On one of my first trips to Thailand I’m doing pads with Kru Pon Sityodong one afternoon. Kru Pon says “Dereeeek, Samart” and points. I rush over and hit the ground waiing to Samart to show my respect. I think he grunted at me and walked away. One of the greatest moments of my life.
If you’re talking about counter-fighters, you have to start with Samart Payakaroon. The “Jade Face Killer” was renowned for his incredible ring IQ, timing, and ability to dismantle opponents with ease. His technical ability is second to none, and he was one of the few fighters who seamlessly transitioned from Muay Thai to boxing, becoming a world champion in both sports.
- What I love: Samart’s ability to read his opponent’s intentions before they even threw a strike is mind-blowing. His counters were perfectly timed and almost effortless.
